Cassidy Demands FEMA Stop Issuing Flawed Flood Maps

Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) sent a letter signed by Senator David Vitter and Representatives Rodney Alexander, Charles Boustany, John Fleming and Steve Scalise to FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. The letter calls on FEMA to stop issuing new flood insurance maps until they can account for, though its Levee Analysis and Mapping Procedure (LAMP), all flood protections, including pumping stations, decertified levees, nonfederal and nonstructural flood protection features, in addition to non-accredited levees when calculating actuarial risk in FEMA maps. Congressman Cassidy released the following statement:

"It's not appropriate for FEMA to unilaterally force new flood insurance rate maps on communities. Especially, because FEMA has not examined their methodology for creating these maps. Local stakeholders and communities must have a voice on the appropriate way to move forward. FEMA needs to account for the flood protection measures that are already successfully protecting communities from flood risk."
