Congresswoman Duckworth Votes Against Motion to Adjourn

On Thursday, July 11, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) voted against a motion to adjourn by the House of Representatives. With the help of Duckworth's vote the House will remain in session.

"There is no reason to head home while there is so much work left to be done here in Washington," said Duckworth. "Families in my district will now be falling farther into debt because Congress has failed to stop student loan interest rates from doubling. Farmers in Illinois continue to face great uncertainty without a farm bill that supports so many jobs. We need to have a serious debate about a compromise on a Farm Bill that includes critical nutrition provisions that support our local food banks and those in need. While the vast majority of my Democratic colleagues voted to adjourn, I opposed adjournment because my neighbors sent me to Washington to work for them and find solutions. We need to get back to work standing up for the working families of this country."

Last month, Duckworth, along with a few of her colleagues, offered an amendment that would have kept subsidized Stafford loan rates at 3.4% for the next two years. This amendment was similar to the Student Loan Relief Act of 2013, which she helped introduce and would have prevented student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1. However, the majority refused to bring the amendment up for a vote.
