Capito Cosponsors the Caring for Coal Miners Act

Statement

Date: July 8, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (WV-02) released the following statement after cosponsoring the Caring for Coal Miners Act. This legislation was introduced by Congressman Ed Whitfield (KY-01) and ensures continued health care coverage for the retirees who are in danger of losing their benefits as a result of Patriot Coal Company's bankruptcy.

"I have met with retirees from West Virginia, and I hear their concerns. It is important that as we continue to address the complicated issues that resulted from the bankruptcy of Patriot Coal Company that we find the best solutions moving forward. The Caring for Coal Miners Act ensures continued health care coverage for the retirees who are in danger of losing their benefits. It is also an important step forward in protecting the benefits that were promised to hardworking miners in states like West Virginia and Kentucky. I will be working with my colleagues, retirees and the UMWA over the coming days on a comprehensive solution that protects pension benefits in addition to health care."
