Congressman Aderholt Discusses Social Security with President Bush

When I talked with the president at the White House, I made him aware of some of the concerns I am hearing on Social Security reform," said Congressman Aderholt.

WASHINGTON - Feb. 9, 2005 - Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) met yesterday afternoon with President George Bush at the White House to discuss the president's plans for Social Security reform. Congressman Aderholt was invited to the meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House so the president could listen to the concerns members of congress have about the re-shaping of the program.

"I agree that the Social Security program is in danger. However, it's essential that the benefits people have already worked for are protected," said Congressman Aderholt. "We must protect our senior citizens who will soon be relying on the program.

"I listened closely to what President Bush had to say about his plan, and while I have yet to take a position on it, I told him of the concerns I believe that the people I represent have with changing Social Security. People want to make sure those currently on Social Security are protected.

"I appreciate the president wanting to know the thoughts of members of congress and the concerns of their districts, and I hope we can work together to reform the system while protecting the people who have already gone onto Social Security or are nearing retirement age.

"I'm looking forward to talking with people district wide and learning their concerns about changing Social Security," added Congressman Aderholt. "I encourage people to contact my office with their thoughts and any ideas they may have concerning new Social Security proposals."
