Securing America: We Cannot Afford to Get it Wrong

Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the federal government has taken measures to protect us from future attacks. Many of these measures involve protecting

our airports, seaports, and train stations. I am sure some of you have probably had to take your shoes off at the airport or have had your bags searched when you travel to visit friends and family. The goods that are coming into the Second District often originate elsewhere and come through large ports that could easily be attacked by terrorists.

I am all for preventive measures designed to protect us, but the measures must be done in a way that does not damage the benefits we receive from our transportation systems. We rely on these systems for travel and for items that stock the shelves at our local stores. If these systems remain unprotected, terrorists will continue to cause a great deal of harm to our families and our economy. To ensure that we get our homeland security measures right, this Administration must make sure that security measures are part of a well thought-out plan. Many security programs are not working because of a lack of staff and funding. Until our government has the right plan coupled with the right funding, I think that a great deal of time and money will continue to be wasted without making us safer. For example, the Department of Homeland Security has several port security programs that serve the some function. This means that your hardearned tax dollars are being wasted. At the same time, some airports do not have enough screeners to ensure we do not have to wait in long lines. The Bush Administration must move quickly to get these measures right because we cannot afford for them to get it wrong.
