Van Hollen Statement on Supreme Court Ruling on Voting Rights Act

Statement

Date: June 25, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which invalidated Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act:

"Today's Supreme Court ruling turns back the clock for voting rights at a time when too many Americans still face discrimination in our country. The Voting Rights Act has been a cornerstone to ensuring that all citizens are able to participate in our democracy. By invalidating one of its core provisions, the Court has upset years of established practices that helped ensure voting is more fair.

"Congress must act immediately to strengthen this law. The right to vote is at the very heart of our constitution and our democracy. We should not rest until we've removed all obstacles to voting."
