Horsford Votes Against Cuts to Vital Food Assistance Programs

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) released the following statement after voting against the five-year Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013 (Farm Bill) that included $20.5 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):

"Today's vote is a victory for the working families of Nevada and our state's most vulnerable residents. The Farm Bill was bad enough when it was introduced earlier this week, but after the amendment process today, the bill became even more offensive. Amendments adopted today would have allowed states to cut unemployed Americans' food assistance, including for their children, because they cannot find jobs.

"The Farm Bill would have increased hunger, hardship, and food insecurity, and I am glad it failed. Now, maybe those who tried to use this bill to target the poor for savings in favor of special interests will come to the table to craft a proper Farm Bill that does the right thing for all families."

The Farm Bill failed 195-234.
