Congresswoman Duckworth Rejects Misguided Legislation that Endangers Women

Statement

On Tuesday, June 18, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) voted against H.R. 1797, the Nationwide 20-Week Abortion Ban bill. The bill removes reproductive health choices from women, their families and their doctors by banning access to abortion after 20 weeks. The legislation has no exceptions to protect a woman's health. Duckworth released the following statement:

When I visit with my neighbors in Illinois they tell me to go back to Washington to create jobs and to make it easier for them to send their kids to college. Instead, the majority is pursuing another partisan and divisive piece of legislation that limits women's ability to control their own reproductive health. This legislation has no chance of being passed by the Senate and becoming law. It is unconstitutional and it is a waste of the American people's time.

We should be working together to provide more choices for women, not less. American women are fully capable of making their own health decisions in consultation with their doctors, and in their own faith tradition. I am deeply saddened that there are still those in Congress who would prevent a doctor from performing a procedure that can have serious consequences for a woman's health. We need to move past this dangerous ideology.

During the last election, the American people spoke clearly. They told Washington to stop taking health choices away from women and to start creating jobs. I look forward to moving past this partisanship and continuing to get to work to help create jobs for my neighbors.
