Hoyer Meets with Mayors in Prince George's County

GREENBELT, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today met with the mayors representing municipalities in Prince George's County today to talk about issues of concern to the mayors and how Congressman Hoyer can be of assistance as their federal partner.

During the discussion, the mayors raised a number of issues of concern to their communities including homeland security funding and the need for law enforcement agencies to be able to communicate with one another; the need for adequate federal funding for education, particularly so that they can meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act; and local transportation funding.

"I appreciate the opportunity to meet with you today, even though I keep in touch with you on a regular basis, because I wanted to hear about the issues of importance to the communities in Prince George's County and discuss what I can do to better help you," said Congressman Hoyer.

"At the federal level, this President is pursuing a fiscally irresponsible agenda that has destroyed a record surplus and left record deficits and exploding debt as far as the eye can see. The budget that he introduced today makes drastic cuts to programs that send federal funds directly to our municipalities, such as the Community Development Block Grants, local law enforcement grants like COPS, grants to assist fire departments, and funds to assist localities provide health care to low-income children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The mayors also acknowledged and thanked Congressman Hoyer for his work to save BARC property, and for his efforts to secure funds for the new research park, M Square, located at College Park. "We want to thank you very much for hosting this meeting," said the mayors.

"Every day you deal with the immediate demands and the watchful eye of citizens expecting you to make their communities a better place to live," Hoyer added. "I look forward to continuing to work with you to bring you the federal resources that will help make positive investments in our communities and in Prince George's County."
Attending the meeting today with Congressman Hoyer were Mayor Fred Robinson, City of Bowie; Mayor Cheye Calvo, Town of Berwyn Heights; Mayor Joe Lomax, Town of Eagle Harbor; Mayor Judith Davis, City of Greenbelt; Mayor Bill Gardiner, City of Hyattsville; Mayor Craig Moe, City of Laurel; Mayor Andrew Hanko, City of New Carrollton; Pat Prangley, City Administrator, Town of Riverdale; and Mayor John Brunner, Town of University Park.
