Peach Pundit - Congressman Doug Collins on Immigration Reform

Statement

Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA-09) participated in a House Judicial Committee Hearing on a bill that he and Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA-03) signed onto as co-sponsors: the SAFE Act. Congressman Collins and others are trying to work on getting a reform bill…the right reform bill:

"All sides of the political spectrum can agree our immigration policies are broken, and we need to take the necessary steps to address those concerns. I chose to be an original co-sponsor of the SAFE Act, because I believe the first and foremost priority of the federal government should be to protect its citizenry, and under current policies and procedures that simply isn't happening. At today's hearing, the House Judiciary Committee specifically reviewed how we can close current loopholes in the law to better engage and take control of the problem we're seeing occur with the release of detained criminal aliens. That's an issue we've seen the Obama Administration play around with over the past few years, specifically in Georgia. Therefore, the implications of this policy to strengthen our national security interests are tremendous. I'm excited for the continued debate on this issue over the next few weeks to begin the task of reestablishing our broken immigration system."

Congressman Collins' questions in today's hearing were directed towards the two letters that the Congressman sent to the Department of Homeland Security.
