Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth held a Roundtable on College Affordability with administrators and students from local colleges at the College of DuPage. The institutions represented included the College of DuPage, Harper College, Elgin Community College, Roosevelt University, and DeVry Institute. The interest rate on many student loans is scheduled to double on July 1, from 3.4% to 6.8%.
"These rate increases will cost 7 million students another $1,000 a year," said Duckworth. "I know that many of my neighbors will have a difficult time finding another $1,000. We cannot allow student loan rates to double. We cannot allow talented young Americans to have their dreams thwarted because we have lost sight of our priorities."
Congresswoman Duckworth is a cosponsor of the Student Loan Relief Act of 2013, which would prevent student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1. The bill would extend the current low interest rate for Stafford student loans at 3.4% for two additional years.
