Cynical of GOP to Use Veterans Funding Bill to Gut Investments in Kids' Education, Research

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the appropriations bills on the floor this week:

"It is cynical that House Republicans would use the rule for the veterans funding bill -- investments we all support -- as a Trojan Horse to slash by 20 percent on top of the sequester the part of the budget that funds our kids' education, workplace safety, and research to find cures and treatments for cancer and other diseases. Speaker Boehner should immediately appoint budget conferees so we can stop this charade and get to work on a final budget that replaces the sequester and stops these harmful cuts."

BACKGROUND:

The rule attached to the Military-Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill would "deem" the House Republican budget as enacted and set the 302(a) allocations for the Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee has now also set 302(b) allocations, and would cut Labor-H Appropriations for FY 2014 by $34 billion, or 20 percent, relative to the post-sequester FY 2013 levels as measured by the Congressional Budget Office's May baseline.
