Jobs Growth Continues with
146,000 Created in January

WASHINGTON-The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today that payroll employment increased by 146,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent, its lowest level since September 2001. BLS also revised data that now show jobs gains of 2.7 million jobs for 20 straight months and payroll jobs are now higher by 119,000 than when the President first took office in January 2001.

"Clearly President Bush's economic policies have been working," said Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.). "Our continued jobs growth has occurred despite the bursting of the internet bubble, the attacks of September 11, and the economic slowdown and recession inherited by President Bush.

"While these jobs numbers are great numbers, there is still more we can do so that every American who wants a job can find one," Diaz-Balart continued. "I will continue to work with President Bush in pushing economic policies that create jobs and keep taxes low on hard-working families.

"If we had followed Democrats' recommendations, a 'state of malaise' would have suffocated this country with hard-working Americans paying higher taxes and millions more still jobless," Diaz-Balart concluded.
