DeLauro Statement On 37th GOP Attempt To End Preventive Care, Raise Prescription Drug Prices, Keep Millions From Health Insurance

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the 37th time the Republican Majority has tried to repeal all or part of the landmark health care reform bill known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

"Today is the 37th time that the Republican Majority has attempted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Welcome to Groundhog Day.

"With high unemployment, struggling families and a fragile economic recovery, America is facing real problems. But instead of working together to move forward, this Majority persists in re-litigating the health care fight of 2010.

"This is National Women's Health Week, making it a particularly odd time for the House Majority to hold this vote. Odd because women have the most to lose from an ACA repeal. Insurance companies would be allowed to charge women more for the same coverage as men and could withhold coverage from women who have had a child or been victims of domestic violence. Coverage for maternity care could erode. Support to help working families buy insurance would dry up. And women would lose access to the free recommended preventive services and screenings that save lives.

"As a cancer survivor I know the value of regular screenings and preventive care. My ovarian cancer was detected by chance in Stage 1, and I have now been cancer-free for 27 years. By repealing the ACA, Republicans would deny millions of women that same access, costing lives.

"Three years ago we at long last put women's health on an equal footing with that of her spouse, son, and brother. We should be building on that, not turning back the clock."
