Wrong Priorities: Bush Budget Slashes Services to Give Tax Cuts to Wealthy

WASHINGTON, DC - DENVER, CO - Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) sharply criticized President George Bush's budget, which was sent to Congress today, saying it was a reflection of four years of wrong priorities by this administration:
"The President's budget is a clear reflection of the misguided priorities he has set for the last four years. Because of the $427 billion budget deficit created by the President's tax cut and spending policies, we are faced with very difficult decisions on what programs to fund and how much to provide them in 2006.

The impact on many of our neighbors will be devastating. In order for the President to make his tax cuts for the wealthy permanent he has slashed the Children's Health Insurance Program - the safety net that provides health care for millions of kids, frozen the National Institutes of Health research budget and cut education funding by billions. Despite these cuts, he will still add $42 billion to the deficit over the next five years. These are not the priorities that will strengthen our nation and economy."
