Keating Brings White Ribbon Campaign to Congress; Continues Efforts to End Violence Against Women

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 7, 2013, is White Ribbon Day in Massachusetts. In an effort to spread awareness of the ongoing problem of domestic violence against women, Congressman Keating brought the White Ribbon Campaign to Congress this week.

Congressman Keating is a long-time supporter of Jane Doe, Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, and is even a White Ribbon Ambassador for the organization.

Said Rep. Keating:
"The message of Jane Doe Inc. and the international White Ribbon Campaign is simple -- men are essential partners in the fight to end domestic violence and sexual assault against women. March is Women's History Month and the unfortunate truth is that the personal history of far too many women in this country includes acts of violence against them. As a District Attorney, I saw that all too often. We must remain vigilant in our commitment to protect our women and girls. I was very proud that so many of my colleagues in Congress embraced the White Ribbon Campaign and wore their white ribbons proudly. I will be wearing my ribbon throughout March in honor of Women's History Month and our fight to change the history of women who suffer at the hand of an abuser."

Rep. Keating brought the white ribbons down to Washington, DC and solicited support for the cause from his colleagues.

Last week, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. Prior to the legislation's passage, the House Republican Majority offered an amendment that would strip protections for certain groups of women, namely immigrants, Native Americans and LGBT victims. Rep. Keating, as a former District Attorney, has long worked to protect women from violence, and he spoke passionately on the Floor of the House about his support of protections for all women.
