Congresswoman Wilson Introduces New Legislation to Step the "Sequester" and Stand Up for Working Families

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) and colleagues in the US House of Representatives introduced a simple and straightforward bill to end Washington's current budget crisis and prevent a new recession. The bill, entitled the "Cancel the Sequester Act of 2013," would repeal the $85 billion in cuts set to take effect at the end of the week as part of the $1.2 trillion of cuts that the Republican-led Congress imposed on the nation over the next decade under the Budget Control Act of 2011. Congresswoman Wilson issued the following statement:

"Unemployment is our nation's true deficit. And nothing would worsen unemployment more than this series of cruel and reckless cuts.

These cuts -- which are the direct result of the Tea Party-led debt ceiling fiasco of 2011 -- are expected to cost the nation more than two million jobs, including more than 79,000 right here in Florida.

I'm proud to co-sponsor this crucial legislation to end the "sequester." Let's stop these reckless cuts and get Members of Congress back to the work they were elected to do: Creating quality jobs.

This is a simple bill that will save lives and livelihoods."
