Collins Calls for Full Protection of the Second Amendment

Statement

Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA) issued the following response to the recommendations given to President Obama earlier today from Vice President Joe Biden's Gun Task Force group, created in the aftermath of the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14, 2012:

"Our entire country felt the devastation and sadness of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary. As a father of three, my thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the families of those beautiful children. I cannot imagine the heartache that entire community is enduring, and my hope as a former minister is that those suffering will reach out to a confidant and find ways to cope with this tragedy.

"However, the recommendations that came down from Vice President Biden today are inaccurate and a blatant attempt to undermine our Constitution. The Second Amendment is just as sacred as the right to free speech and the ability we all have practice whatever religion we so choose. I grew up the son of a Georgia State Patrolman, so I learned at an early age to respect guns and the rights of gun owners. The people of the Ninth District elected me to represent their values and interests, and that means defending every element of our Constitution. If President Obama feels this issue needs to be addressed through an abuse of his power in the form of another Executive Order, I will do whatever I can to ensure his actions are called into further review by Congress in its official oversight capacity. Taking fundamental rights away from hardworking Americans will simply not stand."

Additionally, Representative Collins gave his first speech on the floor of the House of Representatives earlier this week regarding the topic of gun ownership rights and the protection of the Second Amendment. During his one-minute monologue, Collins noted the Obama Administration's blatant abuse of power through Executive Orders.

"The battle to protect the Second Amendment rights of all citizens rages on in Congress," Collins said. "And this is the appropriate place for such debate--not in the dark of night through executive orders as the Obama Administration has become so fond of doing.

"Security can only come through the preservation of individual liberties, such as the right to defend one's home and one's family."
