Congressman Thompson
WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) responded to the punishment issued to the soldiers of the 343rd Quartermaster unit who refused a mission while stationed in Iraq. Congressman Thompson released the following statement:
"I commend the Army's expeditious handling of this matter. My office has worked continuously on this matter since notified by the families of the soldiers in October. To date, we know that the U.S. Army has conducted two investigations into the claims of the 343rd Quartermaster unit. The investigations included one on the safety of the vehicles and one on the adequacy of equipment provided to the soldiers.
We have been informed that disciplinary action has been taken against the soldiers. The range of discipline includes company grade punishment and field grade punishment. However, none of these punishments will be career-ending. Our office has requested formal and informal congressional inquiries. For now, we are waiting for a response from the Army. "
