Issue Position: Modernize West Virginia's network of dams and watershed management installations

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

As Commissioner of Agriculture, I will serve as the Chairman of the West Virginia State Conservation Committee, an entity charged by state law with managing and maintaining a statewide network of dams and watershed management installations. For too long our state's leaders have deferred needed maintenance on these critical pieces of our infrastructure, and as Commissioner and Chairman, I will push for modernization and repair on these facilities. I will work with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) to prioritize those dams and installations most in need of repair and work with the legislature and other state leaders to protect the safety of West Virginians living along streams and rivers controlled by these installations.
