Issue Position: Ending Marijuana Prohibition

Issue Position

Date: Oct. 25, 2012

I believe it is time that Maine takes a stand against the ineffective and unreasonable federal prohibition of marijuana. Maine's current law is costing our state and municipalities millions of dollars to enforce, all the while filling Maine's jails and prisons with otherwise non-violent citizens. It has been scientifically proven that marijuana is less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol, and the many uses of the cannabis plant (food, textiles, oils, recreational use, etc.) could help to create a sustainable multi-billion dollar industry in Maine that would provide quality employment and products. With proper regulation and fair taxation, Maine can set the example for the United States and the world that our society can be much more prosperous by utilizing the many benefits of cannabis. I support the effort to end prohibition and will vote in favor of legislation that aims to do so.
