Kohl, Baldwin Secure Federal Funds for Sun Prairie Water Treatment Plant

KOHL, BALDWIN SECURE FEDERAL FUNDS FOR SUN PRAIRIE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and Senator Herb Kohl have secured $750,000 in federal funds to help renovate Sun Prairie's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The funds were included in the fiscal year 2005 omnibus budget passed by the Congress today. Baldwin fought for the funding in the House, as did Kohl in the Senate.

The city is planning a major renovation of the aging facility because the federal government has deemed it a "failed technology" and to meet new DNR requirements for wastewater treatment. A broken line at the plant earlier in the year served to underscore the urgency of the problem.

"I am pleased that Senator Kohl and I were successful in securing funds for the Sun Prairie Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant's equipment has failed, and it is vital that new efficient and effective wastewater treatment equipment is in place as quickly as possible," said Baldwin, who visited the plant in April for a first-hand look at the problem. "We must keep the area's rivers and streams as clean as possible, not just for us, but for generations to come. Bringing more federal dollars back home to Wisconsin has always been one of my top priorities, and I am delighted that we were able to secure funds for this important project."

"Putting in place a new water treatment system ultimately will benefit community members who otherwise would be faced with high sewer rates. I'm pleased to work with Congresswoman Baldwin to secure the funding for a new water treatment system," Kohl said.
