Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Praises Bush's Choice for New Commerce Secretary

WASHINGTON-Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) today praised President George W. Bush for nominating Kellogg CEO Carlos Gutierrez as Commerce Secretary.

"I know Carlos Gutierrez personally and even had the honor of having his son working for me for two years," Diaz-Balart said. "He is a great man who has been extremely successful in business and in life, and I have no doubts that he will be successful as the next Commerce Secretary. I applaud President Bush for nominating him for this important position."

Gutierrez fled Cuba with his family in 1960 when he was 6. He later joined Kellogg in 1975 and has worked all over the world for the company before being promoted to president and chief operating officer in June 1998.

"Carlos Gutierrez's confirmation will be a success for America and another great boost to the Hispanic community," Diaz-Balart continued. "He is a living testament to the American dream, and his nomination is a towering tribute to his character and also to the greatness of America.

"There were many good candidates President Bush could have chosen, but once again he made the best choice. I encourage the Senate to quickly confirm this well-qualified nominee."
