Issue Position

* I believe we must support a strong military to protect our nation from the threats we face. But our military spending must be focused on defending against the threats of the 21st century, not those of the past. Today's enemies aren't likely to be uniformed forces, but terrorist cells that blend in with the civilian population.

* I will vote to maintain our strength and support our troops. At the same time, I will work to ensure that the defense budget is spent wisely, and the military gets the weaponry and equipment it needs.

* We have seen more dependency on the use of Reserve and National Guard troops, and I will work to ensure those forces remain a strong contingent of our military power. I will work to make certain those who choose to serve their country on a part-time, on-call basis are adequately rewarded and that their civilian jobs are protected for their return.

* Fort Leavenworth and the other military installations in the 2nd District, including the 190th Air Refueling Group in Topeka, must remain important components of the nation's military strategy.
