Issue Position: Fair Tax Policies

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

* Lowering taxes is a priority of every leader, but shared sacrifice is a concern of all Americans. Every American is expected to make an investment in our future. That's why Congresswoman Jenkins' repeated endorsement of even more tax breaks for the richest Americans is disturbing. The Congresswoman would go even further than President George W. Bush did. The legislation she supports could give an average, annual tax break of $265,000 to those with an income over $1 million. The bill would boost the income of the richest Americans by 12.5 percent. The middle class would get only a 2 percent increase in income, while the services they depend on would be slashed. I oppose this proposal.

* I support retaining the Bush era tax cuts for at least one more year for income under $250,000. That's 98 percent of Americans. But we have a debt problem, and I support eliminating the Bush tax breaks for the top 2 percent.
