SCHUMER SECURES $500,000 FOR EAST HARLEM TUTORIAL PROGRAM AND THURGOOD MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Funding included in the FY05 Omnibus Appropriations bill

Projects share best practices among afterschool programs and fund HBCUs

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that Congress passed the FY2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill which included $400,000 for the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and $100,000 for the East Harlem Tutorial Program, Inc. The funding was included in the Labor-Health and Human Services Appropriations portion of the bill. The bill now heads to the President for his signature.

"There are certain projects and programs that we know beyond a shadow from years of experience work, and in a time of tighter and tighter budgets, that's where we need to be putting our money, Schumer said. "The East Harlem Tutorial project shares what works between prep programs that get our kids ready for the best schools, and then the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Funds helps pay their way at public HBCUs. They know what works, and that's why I am so proud to deliver these funds today."
