On Solemn Week, Do-Nothing Republican Congress Continues to Ignore Critical Issues

Statement

This week marked the solemn anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. I joined with my colleagues to remember those who were lost on that day, and to pledge to continue efforts that keep our nation safe and secure. We were also all saddened by the tragic death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya. This outrageous attack is an important reminder of the many Americans representing our country overseas, the dangers they face, and our duty to keep them safe. My deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of these Americans, and we will honor their unwavering commitment to peace and democracy.

In the House this week, Republican leaders unfortunately chose not to address a number of critical issues, including passing a comprehensive jobs bill, extending middle class tax cuts, passing a Farm Bill that includes drought relief for our nation's farmers, reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, or creating a balanced plan to address the upcoming fiscal cliff. And today, Republican Leader Eric Cantor announced that next week will be our last in session until November. I'm disappointed that we'll be leaving town without giving certainty to Americans and businesses on so many pressing issues.
