Schumer convinced the TSA to give Stewart additional screeners and equipment in July but the new screeners have still not been hired; New plan would speed up hiring and bring new jobs to the Hudson Valley

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today urged the head of the Transportation Security Administration to speed up the hiring of additional screeners at Stewart Airport by hiring local Hudson Valley workers for the jobs instead of workers from New Jersey. Schumer said that the TSA practice of recruiting screeners from Central New Jersey is delaying the arrival of the new screeners - because prospective employees don't want to travel three hours to and from work- and that the jobs should go to local workers from the Hudson Valley who live in the communities surrounding the airport.

"No offense to New Jersey, but it's a no-brainer that the TSA should recruit local workers from the Hudson Valley for these spots- not workers from New Jersey who would have to drive three hours each day," Schumer said. "Yes, the TSA promised Stewart the screeners, but it doesn't do us any good until they are actually hired and put to work. The process is taking too long and these jobs should go to local New Yorkers who will jump at the opportunity to get started right away at Stewart."
