Issue Position: Protecting seniors from losing their electricity

Issue Position

Since the Texas Legislature deregulated the electricity market, some Texas families have seen increases as high as 64% in their electric bills. Senator Hinojosa has been a leader in protecting the rights of consumers and the safety of seniors, especially homebound seniors and those on fixed incomes.

* Blocked legislation that cut funding from the System Benefit Fund---- the fund helps seniors pay their utility bills during the summer months.
* Proposed legislation that would put a moratorium on electricity disconnections for senior citizen consumers.
* Supported legislation that gives power to the consumer, allowing you to compare your electric plan against other plans and find the best electric rates available.
* Voted for legislation that requires electric companies to notify fixed-price consumers in writing when their rates are going to increase.
