Pelosi Statement on Resignation of Secretary of State Colin Powell

Washington, D.C.-House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the resignation of Secretary of State Colin Powell:

"Secretary Powell's resignation is a great loss for the Bush Administration and for the country. As a soldier and a statesman, Colin Powell provided exceptional leadership. His steady hand and the reasoned approach he brought to his work will be sorely missed.

"There are few offices in government more critical than Secretary of State. In choosing a successor, the President should look for someone with not only the breadth of experience, but also the strength of character that Colin Powell brought to the job. Secretary Powell represented the United States with great distinction, and it is essential that the next secretary be seen by the international community as a person of similar stature and ability."
