Congressman Carson knows that education is the key to the continued growth and economic success of our nation. His wife, Mariama, who is a local educator and principal in Pike Township, teachers, parents and students across the city speak regularly with him about how funding shortfalls and misguided national policies are leaving too many of our children behind. Congressman Carson is especially alarmed by the high school dropout rate, which is why he authored legislation to provide mentors to at-risk students, helping them through the difficult transition into high school. He strongly advocates for Congress to immediately consider education reform to establish policies that better use talented teachers, involve parents, and provide students with the strongest possible educational foundation for their futures.
Congressman Carson believes that higher education or technical training should be available to any student who wants it--regardless of income. This summer, he successfully fought to prevent a doubling of student loan interest rates that would raised costs for millions of students and kept many from pursuing higher education. He has also voted to increase funding for Pell Grants, which allow many low-income students to afford higher education.
