DeLauro Statement on House Consideration of 9/11 Commission Recommendations

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement today following the late-night defeat of a Democratic substitute to H.R. 10, the Republican 9/11 intelligence reform bill. The substitute would have implemented all of the recommendations of the independent 9/11 Commission. H.R. 10 fully implements only 15 of the Commission recommendations.

"Congress has an obligation to the American people to make sure they are secure and that our country is guarded from another terror attack. That is why the House should have enacted the Democratic substitute, which paralleled the recommendations of the Commission. Instead, the House passed a bill that flies in the face of the bipartisan work of the Commission.

"I voted for the House bill that resembled the Collins-Lieberman National Intelligence Reform Act , which overwhelmingly passed the Senate last night. This legislation was endorsed by the 9/11 Commission and the 9/11 families.

"Our country pays more each day on the interest to our federal debt than on homeland security. The fact that Republicans could defeat these recommendations when our nation's security is at such a crossroads, begs the question: when will the Republican leadership stop playing politics with our country's security?"
