Rokita Issues Statement on June Jobs Report

Floor Speech

Date: July 6, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita today responded to the Department of Labor's June jobs report, which indicated that only 80,000 new jobs were created, 15,000 less than projected.

"Today's report of a steady 8.2% unemployment rate is a far cry from the promised 5.6% rate that the President used to pass his ineffective $800 billion stimulus package in 2009. We are reminded each month by the Department of Labor that President Obama's economic policies continue to fail Hoosiers.

"Digging deeper into these numbers, we find that our U-6, or "actual," unemployment rate is 14.9% when counting the 88 million who have not looked for a job in over four weeks. In our minority communities, the numbers are even more dismal.

"The time for action is now and my House colleagues and I have continued to pass legislation that would kick-start our economy. It is regretful that the Senate and President play politics with Hoosier jobs. The hypocrisy of the President's "we can't wait" mantra is evident as nearly 30 pro-jobs bills await action by the Senate or the President, while initiatives like my Red Tape Rollback program continue to target Administration regulations that stifle job growth," said Rokita.
