Van Hollen Announces New Efforts on the DISCLOSE Act

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen announced that House Democrats will start the process to discharge the DISCLOSE Act 2012 from the House. In the wake of the Supreme Court's flawed ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, the DISCLOSE Act would add much needed transparency to the unlimited political expenditures now allowed by outside groups.

"Every day, we see more secret money flooding into our elections and drowning out the voices of the American people. Congress should act immediately to pass the DISCLOSE Act, and I applaud the Senate for taking up the legislation next week. All we ask is that House Members have the same opportunity," said Congressman Van Hollen. "Voters have a right to know who is trying to influence their vote, and we owe it to them, and to the health of our democracy, to shine a light on the unprecedented money being spent by shadowy interests. These secret funders are trying to elect a Congress that will rig the rules to benefit their special interest agendas. We can't allow that to happen. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear from the DISCLOSE Act."
