Issue Position: Threat of Nuclear Iran

Issue Position

Iran is one of the greatest threats to peace and stability in the world. We cannot allow the regime in Iran to obtain nuclear weapons capability--under any circumstances. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier who has clearly stated his desire to "wipe Israel off the map."Iranian leaders have even gone as far as to call Israel a "one bomb state," meaning a single nuclear weapon would destroy Israel. The US and Israel must do everything in our power to prevent Iran from acquiring or building nuclear weapons or in any way acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

I am appalled by the Obama Administration's handling of Iran. The single most effective deterrent to Iran is the threat of force, yet the Obama Administration has virtually taken that option off the table. President Obama's actions have the potential to weaken the US-Israeli relationship, and have emboldened those who would threaten Israel. The world is less safe for both the United States and Israel when there is any question about the US commitment to this relationship.

We need to continue to push for the toughest sanctions possible on Iran. The leadership and the people of Iran need to understand the consequences for the path the regime has chosen is absolute isolation from the world. I also support the use of force if necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and we need a clear foreign policy that leaves no question this an option we will exercise--though only as a last resort.
