Hoyer Statement on President's Call to Extend Middle Class Tax Cuts

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in support of President Obama's call to extend tax cuts for those making up to $250,000 a year:

"I commend the President for standing up for middle-class families by calling for Congress to act swiftly in extending the middle-class tax cut. This is an area where Democrats and Republicans ought to be working together. Instead, Republicans have held hostage the prospect of continuing a lower tax rate for middle-class families in return for tax cuts for the wealthy.

"Middle-class families deserve fiscal certainty. I call on Republicans to set aside their demands that the wealthiest also receive a tax cut, at great cost to our deficit, and work with us to pass an extension for middle-class families to provide that certainty."
