Statement of Governor Warner on the U.S. Senate Passage of a Buyout of the Tobacco Quota System

Issues: Drugs

Governor Mark R. Warner issued the following statement today upon U.S. Senate passage of the $10 billion buyout of the tobacco quota system:

"Passage of this legislation is very important to Virginia's tobacco growers, and my administration worked hard in a bipartisan way to secure support for this proposal, both with other tobacco state governors and through our congressional delegation.

"While I would have preferred that the legislation include language giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate tobacco, I believe this proposal represents a reasonable compromise that ultimately will provide long-term benefits to farmers and other residents of Virginia's tobacco-growing regions."
