Letter To President Encourages Federal Assistance To Storm Ravaged Alabama

WASHINGTON, DC B Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today joined his colleagues in the House and Senate in sending a letter to the President supporting Alabama Governor Bob Riley's request for a major disaster declaration for Alabama in the wake of Hurricane Ivan.

"As Hurricane Ivan moves closer to Alabama's shores, it has become increasingly obvious that the damage and destruction of this storm will be extensive and to many catastrophic," says the letter to President George W. Bush. "At this point, there is little doubt that Hurricane Ivan will put the safety of Alabama's citizens in jeopardy and have a major impact on our state's economy. We ask that you ensure that any and every asset available to the federal government be called in to respond to this looming disaster. We know that Alabama's first responders are some of the best in the world and that they are up to the task. However, the support of the federal government will be a crucial part of the long-term recovery and we hope the reaction will be swift and efficient.

"We stand ready to work with you and our colleagues in Congress to provide the appropriate funds and authorities necessary to respond to Hurricane Ivan," concludes the letter, which was signed by the state's entire congressional delegation.
