House Republicans Continue to Put Norquist Pledge Before Pledge to American People

Statement

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the meeting between House Republicans and Grover Norquist on Capitol Hill:

"This meeting highlights the fact that House Republicans continue to put tax breaks for the very wealthy and special interests before getting our fiscal house in order, protecting the Medicare guarantee, creating jobs, and investing in our nation's future. By refusing to ask millionaires to contribute a single penny of additional revenue to reduce our deficit, their pledge to Grover Norquist clearly comes before their pledge to the American people. We already tried the Republican trickle-down economics plan -- it lifted a few yachts but ran the rest of the boats aground. It's time to move forward to boost our economic recovery and ask for shared responsibility, not turn back the clock."
