Issue Position: States Rights vs. Federal Government

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

I strongly support the 10th Amendment. I am a strong proponent of local control: thus, the more close to the people that the decisions are made, the better the decisions are. For example, I know for a fact that if Utah was allowed to manage public lands, we would do a far better job of utilizing these resources than the federal government. There have been numerous state rights-type bills that have come through the Legislature the past four years, of which I have supported most, if not all, of them. This is a battle that we are facing in Washington and Iron Counties with the Endangered Species Act. The Iron County Commission is pushing very hard to get control of the management of prairie dogs. We know we can do it better than the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These are the battles that the state of Utah needs to get behind and fight.
