Requests Investigation Into Troop Detainment

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie g. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement:

"My office was contacted yesterday afternoon regarding the alleged detainment of an Army unit with troops from my district. I was told that approximately 17 troops were taken into US military custody after refusing to go out on a dangerous mission, citing their poorly equipped vehicles.

"President Bush and his administration have taken the position that the troops are well-armored. However, this is a prime example of how out of touch this Administration is with the needs of our troops.

"My office has submitted congressional inquiries to the Department of Defense and United States Army to investigate the detainment of our troops.

"Of an even greater concern is the question whether the Administration is neglecting our servicemen and servicewomen serving overseas."
