Ayotte: Russia Must Stop Weapons Shipments to Assad Regime

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today regarding Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's comments about information that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syria:

"This news is deeply troubling. By transferring weapons to the Assad regime, Russia has been an accomplice to the murder of thousands of innocent civilians in Syria. For Russia to send attack helicopters to Assad would represent a serious escalation in the conflict and, tragically, would make it easier for the regime to kill civilians. Russia's reported move is particularly disturbing in light of today's UN report detailing the Assad regime's brutal and deplorable treatment of children.

"I urge Russia to immediately halt all weapon shipments to Syria, and to join the international community in seeking an end to violence and the departure of Assad from power."
