N.C. Rep Fred Steen has endorsed his former primary opponent Richard Hudson in the 8th Congressional District runoff.
With his announcement Monday, Steen broke ranks from the other two unsuccesful primary candidates. Two weeks ago, Vernon Robinson and Dr. John Whitley announced their support of Hudon's opponent, Salisbury dentist and Iredell County resident Dr. Scott Keadle.
"As a voter and resident of the 8th District, I believe we need a representative who has experience, passion and knowledge of our District," Steen said in a press release sent by Hudson's office. "Richard Hudson will be a true representative, someone who will serve the people of the 8th District well."
A life-long resident of the district, Steen has served as a representative of the 76th District in the state house since 2004. Previously, Steen served as mayor of Landis for five terms.
"I have known Richard for 15 years and worked with him when he served on the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Board of Trustees," Steen said. "He is a hard worker and strives to do his best for those around him. In the course of this campaign, I have found him to be a man of faith and one who will stand for Christian principles in Congress. I am proud to endorse him."
Hudson, Concord resident and owner of a consulting business, was the top vote-getter in Tuesday's primary race, with 32 percent of the vote compared to Keadle's 22 percent. But he didn't make it over the 40 percent threshold to avoid a runoff election.
Although Steen received just 14 percent of the vote district-wide, he carried Rowan County with 38 percent.
"Fred Steen is a man of integrity who has served the people of Rowan and Cabarrus County with honor and hard work for years," Hudson said in the press release. "I am grateful to have his endorsement and will work to earn the support of thousands of 8th District voters who supported Fred in the primary."
Robinson, a former Winston-Salem City Council member who moved to Concord last year, finished third in Tuesday's primary with 18 percent of the vote. Whitley, a Fairmont neurosurgeon, received 13 percent.
