Schumer Announces Utica's USA Sewing Wins over $3.5 Million Federal Contract that will Bring 100 New Jobs to Utica

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that USA Sewing in Utica was awarded a $3,507,500 contract from the Department of Defense (DOD). USA Sewing has already hired 60 workers, and will eventually hire 100 workers at their Broad Street headquarters to manufacture 115,000 flame-resistant Kevlar combat gloves for the Army. Schumer's announcement comes after the Utica-based small business submitted multiple proposals over seven months to secure a DOD contract for FY2012.

"I am proud to announce that the Army has chosen USA Sewing in Utica to manufacture top-of-the-line combat gloves for the United States Army," said Schumer. "This contract helps our women and men in uniform secure vital equipment that allows them do their heroic work overseas, and at the same time puts 100 New Yorkers back to work on Broad Street. I am confident this is the first of many incoming federal contracts for USA Sewing and other Central NY manufacturers because of their proven record of excellence. These jobs will be a boost for the Utica economy and the Central NY workforce. No one knows how to put on their gloves and go to work better than the people of New York."

Schumer pointed out that new workers on Broad Street in Utica, NY will provide soldiers with the Kevlar combat glove used to protect their hands from fragments and hard impact. He also noted that these new jobs will directly support our heroes both on the battlefield and during training.

"Senator Schumer has been working hand in glove with us ever since he stepped foot in our factory," said Giovanni Inserra, President of USA Sewing. "He's certainly kept his promise of going to bat for us. And because of his special attention, our future looks bright. We'll continue to work with the Department of Defense and other contractors who look to Utica, New York, for a quality product they can rely on."

Schumer lauded USA Sewing, which relies on DOD contracts to sell its Kevlar gloves to the Army. USA Sewing hires based on the size of the contract. In the past, Schumer pointed out that USA Sewing had significant potential for growth and hiring in the near future as they bid for future DOD contracts.
