U.S. Rep. Peters Denounces Senate GOP for Blocking Bill to Stop Student Loan Rate Hike

Following news that Senate Republicans voted to blocked debate on a bill to prevent federal subsidized Stafford student loan interest rates from doubling in 53 days, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters issued the following statement:

"With just 53 days until student loan interest rates double, it's shocking that Republicans blocked the Senate from even debating a bill to prevent this rate hike," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "If Republicans refuse to act, 7.4 million American students, including 303,000 Michiganders, will take on an average of $1,000 in new debt for every year that they receive these loans. The clock is ticking, so I urge Republicans to stop playing partisan games."

In Congress, U.S. Rep. Peters has taken a lead role in the fight to prevent this rate hike from happening on July 1st. U.S. Rep. Peters also held a press conference last week where several area college students told their stories about how this rate hike would impact them.
