Van Hollen: GOP Pays Lip Service to Student Loans while Again Hitting Working Families

Statement

Date: April 25, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement responding to the student loan rate fix proposed today by House Republicans:

"House Republicans took a very clear stance on this issue when they all voted to pass the Republican budget, which would result in a doubling of student loan interest rates while providing windfall tax breaks for millionaires. The GOP has suddenly changed their tune now that it has become politically unpopular. While they may be paying lip service to this issue, if they were really serious they wouldn't have proposed to help students by hurting other middle-class Americans. They are yet again asking working families to pay the price instead of closing tax loopholes that benefit special interests."
