Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) today released the following statement on the landmark agreement signed between President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai signifying the beginning of the end of America's combat operations in Afghanistan that started more than a decade ago.

"This historic Strategic Partnership Agreement begins the transition that will lead to the end of our nation's combat operations in Afghanistan next year. It also reaffirms President Obama's decision to return 23,000 servicemen and women home to their families within the next few months. I would now like to see a responsible withdrawal of the remaining American combat troops from Afghanistan as soon as possible. It is time for the Afghan government to take responsibility for its own national security and allow our brave service members to come home."
