Congresswoman Laura Richardson Statement on Anniversary of Successful Raid by U.S. Forces Resulting in the Killing of Osama Bin Laden
Statement
One year ago today, May 1, 2012, President Obama announced that the long search for the most wanted criminal in American history had ended with the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden:
"When he addressed the nation and a joint session of the Congress in the days after the attacks of September 11, President Bush said: 'Whether the terrorists are brought to justice or justice brought to the terrorists, justice will be done.' Thanks to the leadership and determination of President Obama and the courage and skill of our men and women in uniform, one year ago justice was meted out to the mastermind of 9/11, Osama bin Laden.
"I commend President Obama on his leadership, focus, and perseverance as well as the bravery of the courageous Special Forces who participated in the heroic operation that led to the killing of the world's most wanted man. All Americans owe a debt of thanks to our military leaders and the intelligence community, and to the Special Forces team who carried out the successful raid.
"In remembering the anniversary of this important milestone in the war against al Qaeda, we are not suggesting that the mission has been fully accomplished. There is still work to do and we must renew our resolve to prevent, deter, and bring to justice those who would resort to acts of terror to our way of life to justice. "
