Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) released the following statement today on Equal Pay Day, which recognizes the unequal pay women continue to receive for the same work as men:

"80 cents. On average, each woman in Hawaii is paid 80 cents for every dollar a man makes for doing the same work. That's a wage gap of more than two million dollars a year between full-time working women and men. This gender wage gap exists regardless of education level or industry. Our women deserve better.

"To have a strong economy driven by middle class families, we cannot tolerate pay discrimination. That's why I supported the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the first bill President Obama signed into law. But there's still more work to do. In honor of Equal Pay Day, let's keep up our fight for fair pay."
