Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici Opposes GOP Budget to End the Medicare Guarantee and Provide Huge Tax Cuts for the Wealthy

Press Release

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), a member of the House Budget Committee, today voted against the devastating GOP budget plan that would kill the Medicare guarantee, and instead provide enormous tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.

"We have a real choice to make here, a choice between a Republican budget that hurts the middle class and those who are struggling to get out of poverty, and a Democratic alternative that presents a balanced approach to reinvest in our economy," Bonamici said during the budget debate. "It is critical for the communities and employers in my district and around this great country that we continue to support -- not cut -- research and workforce development, that we renew our commitment to -- not cut -- public education. These are key areas in which we must invest in order to maintain and accelerate our much-needed economic recovery."

Bonamici supported the Democratic alternative, which reflects the fundamental principles of fairness, opportunity, and prosperity for all. The Democratic budget protected the Medicare guarantee to ensure seniors receive the benefits they have earned. The Democratic budget alternative also preserved funding for education, workforce development initiatives, and consumer protection.

"Our public schools, universities, and community colleges are the cornerstones of our communities." Bonamici said. "Instead of cutting Pell Grants and raising student loan interest rates in order to provide tax breaks for millionaires, let's work to protect our financial aid investments. Continued access to these programs will help prepare our future workers."

"We're at a fork in the road, and I urge my colleagues to avoid the path to poverty by rejecting the Republican budget and coming together to support the balanced Democratic approach." Bonamici concluded.
